Position of column grand total in matrix layout style Tabular vs Compact

Starting a matrix with Layout style Tabular: Column grand total at top of the table. Switching to style Compact: Total moves to the bottom of the table. Switching back to Tabular: Total stays at the bottom of the table, does not remove back to the top of table.

There are no options to choose the position of the Column grand total in a matrix, so is there any solution to solve this? Or is this a bug?

HI,@JessicaWieringa

Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks for letting us know your user experience.  According to your case description, I do understand how frustrated you are now.

Nevertheless, according to our measured results, I feel regretful to inform you that it turns out to be a by-design one.

The part of the feature you're looking at is the one that was updated in the last May, so most of the features may still be in development, here's a screenshot of that:

hi @JessicaWieringa

You can select outline then grand total will be on top

Uzi2019_0-1720089176467.png

if you are selecting tabular then grand total will be in bottom.

only this way you can manage grand total position.

I hope i answered your question!

Don't forget to give thumbs up and accept this as a solution if it helped you!!!

Hi @Uzi2019

I followed your solution using PowerBI desktop 2024, I then published it to the report server (May 2024) and the total appears at the bottom in the report server, is there a work around to this?

Tnx for your answer, but it doens't solve my problem.

My problem is that when I start building a matrix, Total is at the top (style Tabular, it is recorded in JSON theme that the style for a matrix will be Tabular):

Then I swtich to Compact and Total moves to the bottom (when I switch to Outline, Total also moves to the bottom):

JessicaWieringa_1-1720422794508.png

Then I switch back to Tabular, and Total stays at the bottom. It doesn't remove back to the top:

Thanks for the reply from@Uzi2019,please allow me to provide another insight:

Hi,@JessicaWieringa

Here's how I measured it:

1.First of all, when we create the matrix, his default option in the layout section is Compact, and here is a screenshot of it by default:

vlinyulumsft_0-1720495789863.png

And if you want to be consistent with the second screenshot you provided, you need to modify it in the following position,Here's a screenshot of the modified version:

vlinyulumsft_1-1720495805385.png

2.Second, the total total of the first screenshot you provided should be the result rendered by the layout section for the Outline at the top:

vlinyulumsft_2-1720495819525.png

But the first screenshot you provided is the result that the total of each level is set to bottom at the bottom of the Row subtotal, but if we set the Outline position to Outline and the position of the Row subtotal to the bottom in the layout section, it is inconsistent with your result:

vlinyulumsft_3-1720495833256.png

3.Finally, here's a screenshot of the layout section as tabular, and you may want to note that the position of the Row subtotal can't be changed under this setting:

vlinyulumsft_4-1720495846496.png

So we didn't see the problem you were experiencing in our measurements, so here's the solution we proposed:

1.First, it is recommended that you check if the JSON file where the data is read conflicts with the PowerBI settings:

2.Second, update the version and then recreate the matrix.

Here is my current version number:

Here is the official download link:

Download Microsoft Power BI Desktop from Official Microsoft Download Center

3.If you want to change the location of total, here are the locations that can be changed:

If you have any new discoveries, please feel free to contact us.

Please find the attached pbix relevant to the case.

Tnx for your answer and the screenshots @Anonymous

I checked our JSON file and it says:

- "layout": "Tabular"

- "rowSubtotalsPosition": "Bottom"

Here is the screenshot of Tabular style, and position 'Bottom' (which can't be changed under this setting), while grand Total is at the top:

JessicaWieringa_1-1720510005572.png

When I switch to layout style Compact or Outline, the grand Total moves to the bottom (2nd schreenshot in my previous post). And when I switch back to Tabular, grand Total stays at the bottom (3rd screenshot in my previous post).

I wonder why the position of the subtotals is not adjustable for style Tabular, but for Outline and Compact it is adjustable.
