Periods seperation
Hello Community,
I'm working with a Line and Clustered Column Chart that includes multiple measures. I'm looking for a way to visually distinguish different "YYYYMM" periods within the chart.
As far as I know, this chart type doesn't support vertical grid lines or background shading to separate periods. Given these limitations, does anyone have suggestions or best practices for visually separating time periods to make them more identifiable?

Visual Separation Options:
- Add vertical reference lines - Insert calculated columns with null values at period boundaries, creates natural gaps between months/quarters
- Alternating data point styling - Use conditional formatting to alternate colors every 2-3 periods (e.g., Jan-Mar in blue, Apr-Jun in purple)
- Period grouping with spacing - Group your YYYYMM values and add small gaps using DAX measures that return BLANK() at transition points
- Dual-axis workaround - Create a secondary line series that acts as period markers, set to minimal opacity
Quick Implementation:
The easiest is probably the reference line method - just add a measure that returns NULL at your desired break points (like every 6 months). This creates visual white space without needing custom visuals.
Alternative Chart Types:
If flexibility is crucial, consider switching to a custom visual like Zebra BI or ZoomCharts which offer better period separation controls.
