PL - 300 Cert Prep Confusion

I am doing the "Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) Cert Prep: Cleaning, Transforming, and Loading Data in Power BI" training on LinkedIn and am on the "Understanding your Power BI data" module watching the "ProfilingPower BI Data" video. For reference it's around the two minute mark on the video.

The instructor mentions this: "Distinct is the total of all the different values on a column, including Duplicates and Nos. For example, here on the ProductID column, we have 504 distinct values on a table with 504 rows. That makes sense as ProductID is an identity column, and primary key. And therefore, supposed to identify each product on my company individually. If I add 10 additional new values on this column, the count would change from 504 to 505 to include one instance of no."

I am unsure why the number of distinct values went to 505 from 504 instead of 514 in his theoretical example. Can someone help?

For context even though this is a logic-based question, and specific to Column statistics, the question should be funneled through LinkedIn Learning and addressed to the instructor Emilio Melo as a Comment, Q&A, or a Chat with support.  The assumption is that you are also following along with the exercise files (Ex_Files_Cleaning_Transforming_Loading_Data_Power_BI.zip) where you would be able to apply your theory and see the result in the context of the files used in the Course.

How would I test out adding a new value? What does he mean by new value?

The following course module reviews the setup of the Exercise Files:

Short answer:

If I understand your question, you would like advice on how to add a new row to an Excel Workbook that is used as an imported data source for a Power BI Desktop file.

Assumption:  Somewhere in the courseware it explains how to follow along with the exercise files.

  • Extract the folder containing the Exercise files.  Within the PBIX, update the data sources for each Query so that when the PBIX is refreshed, each query updates without error.
  • Locate the appropriate Excel workbook for the query you wish to update, and add a new row of data to the bottom of the worksheet.  Save the workbook.
  • Return to Power BI, and Refresh.
  • Locate the Table matching the data source, and verify that a new row has been added.
