Overwriting a report with the same name in a workspace but different datasets

Hi All,

I have a master report which is the main dataset and a couple reports connected to this datasource with users having shared access to these reports.

Can I upload a new report master and datatset with a different name, then overwrite the individual reports connected to the first master report to now point to this new dataset and reports, I've duplicated all the individual reports and made minor changes and called them the same name as the previous reports. I've already tried uploading to my workspace but it shows 2 reports with the same name opposed to overwriting the previous. All this is basically to avoid having to manually reshare all reports.

Is this even possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Taylor

Yes, it is possible to upload a new report master and dataset with a different name, then overwrite the individual reports connected to the first master report to now point to this new dataset and reports. However, it's important to note that when you upload a new report with the same name as an existing report, it will create a new report with a unique identifier to avoid overwriting the existing report.

To avoid having to manually reshare all reports, you can try using the "Replace Data Source" feature in Power BI. This feature allows you to replace the data source of a report with a new data source, without having to recreate the report.

To use this feature, first, create a new dataset with the new name and connect it to the data source. Next, go to the report that you want to replace the data source for, and click on "Edit Queries". In the Query Editor, go to "Advanced Editor" and replace the old data source with the new data source in the M code. Save and close the Query Editor.

Now, go back to the report view and click on "Transform Data" in the "Transform Data" ribbon. This will bring up the "Replace Data Source" dialog box. Select the new dataset from the dropdown menu and click "Replace". This will replace the data source for the report with the new dataset.

Repeat this process for all the reports that you want to update with the new dataset. This will allow you to avoid manually resharing all reports, as the existing sharing permissions will be retained.

How can you do this with shared datasets?
