Dear Experts:
The microsoft learn platform writes on the subject of using an on-premises data gateway. It can be accessed thru this link Use a personal gateway in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn:
It says among other things:
"The on-premises data gateway (personal mode) is a version of the on-premises data gateway that works only with Power BI. You can use a personal gateway to install a gateway on your own computer and get access to on-premises data."
Here comes my question: the on-premises data gateway (personal mode) only works with Power BI. What do they refer to:
a) Power BI Desktop or b) Power BI Service or c) both ?
Help is very much appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
Regards, Andreas

Hi @AndyHermle
The on-premises data gateway in personal mode is specifically designed to work with Power BI Service. It serves as a bridge between the Power BI cloud service and your on-premises data sources, enabling data refresh and live queries from the service to your local environment.
While you may develop reports in Power BI Desktop, the gateway itself does not interact directly with Power BI Desktop. Instead, its functionality is centered around Power BI Service, where it facilitates scheduled refresh and live connections.

Hi @AndyHermle ,
Ritaf1983 , Good answer!
And @AndyHermle , Power BI Desktop does not need to use the on-premises data gateway. Both on-premises data gateway personal mode and on-premises data gateway standard mode are used in Power BI Service.
In addition, if you need to check which gateways you have and which gateways you want to use, you can check them here in Service:
