On bar graph show every 2nd bar it's value, always starting from the most right bar

Hi, I've got a bar graph, and I've enabled showing the values of the bars.

Not all values are shown, I assume this is because of space limit because otherwise the values would overlay and you won't be able to read them anymore.

What I  would like, is that only every 2nd value is shown in the graph, starting from the most right bar.

I looked if I could find this but until now no luck.

Anyone who knows if this is possible, and if so how to solve this?

Eg. Let say I have always the latest 12 months data shown in a bar graph, each month being a bar.

I would like to see the value of the latest month and all others but then skip everytime a bar.

@Namoh , not sure you shared any screenshot of bar visual. You can change bar type as categorical

To my knowledge this is not possible with normal settings. I have a workaround that might work for you.

Start off with a small column chart:

Add a calculation that returns the sum on every 2nd datapoint on the x-axis:

Navigate to the formatting pane, press data labels and then customize series on the bottom:

Apply data labels only to the 2rd measure and have them positioned inside base.

Finally change the color of the same measurement to match the background:

Your method might work.

Although my bars don't have the same colors (FYs = color x, ytd = color y, months = color z, etc) I might be able to do this.

But when I look my options stop at: Show Background.

I don't have the option: Customize Series..??

Is this a new feature?

I'm running PowerBi Desktop version april 2020 (2.80.5803.1061 64bit)

I'm not sure to be honest... Could you provide me with the name of the chart you are using and what and where columns/measures are being used?

Well I'm using the Dutch version, so don't know exactly the English phrase, but I assume it's something like: Stacked Bar chart.

It's the 2nd from the left on the top row, in the visualisation overview.

Columns are fiscal years and month numbers for Loss Ratio's, all in %.

I hope this is what you're referring too.

If not, please make it more specific, maybe even with screenshots, because I'm just starting with PowerBI so not an expert with all the phrases, etc.

I was just thinking that you could experiment with using more than one chart. You could create a chart for each color, group them and assign the same Y-axis interval. Follow it up by only displaying the Y-axis on the leftmost chart. This should allow you to apply my method to only display every 2nd datalabel.

It might be a little too high maintainance, but it might meet yoyur requirements.

The customize series will only appear once there is more than one value being displayed:

Can you take a picture of this view:

From what i can tell my solution is not going to work for you. It looks like you're manually coloring the columns which is only possible if you have a single column value. If you were to add another value to be white and dissapear with the backround you would no longer be able to color the different categories they way they are currently.

Is there any specific reason as to why all of these categories needs to be in the same column chart?

Not quite sure what you mean with: Is there any specific reason as to why all of these categories needs to be in the same column chart?

This is the format the management wants to see this KPI.

I'm just the one creating (or at least trying) what's been requested. 😉

It would be great if this would have been possible, but it's also not that a big issue.

Thanks for your help anyway.

And yes, I've colored the the bars/columns manually.

I tried with conditional formatting but didn't find the way to present it as it's shown now.

Hi @Namoh ,

You don't have any field in "Legend"( "Legenda" ), so you could not use "Customize series". You could add a field in it and check if it works.
