New to Power Bi - I have a SQL connection question

I have the power bi desktop installed in my machine. But when i try to connect to our SQL Server using Windows login, it says "We couldn't authenticate with the credentials provided"

If i try to login in with my Microsoft account, then i get different error: "Microsoft SQL: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted"

How do i connect to the sql server? Do i need to have SSMS installed in my laptop? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

  AL

Hi @AL_Thomas

It would depend on how the SQL database was set up. If you are able to connect to the SQL server via SSMS then you should be able to connect via Power BI using the same method.

Try to take a look at which connection you are using via SSMS and replicate the same connection via Power BI. You should see three primary modes: Windows, SQL, or Azure.

All else fails, you should definitely contact your DB admins to do a root cause analysis on the issue.

I talked to my Db admin. and he told me he had to set me up/give me permission to access the SQL server. Once he did that, i was finally able to connect.
