Hello all!
I have a data set in the power bi service (it is a power bi data set, not excel or anything like that) that i am trying to build a report off of in the desktop app. The problem is that i cant edit/format the variables, like making a date hierarchical. The data set needs to remain a power bi data set as the plan is to automate its refresh. Any ideas how i can edit these variables?

@Anonymous set of columns are part of a table, for example, you have a customer table and it has three columns, cutomer name, cutomer address, customer city, these all are columns and variable is someting user in DAX expression, for example
Test Measure =
VAR __x = SUM ( Table[Profit] )
VAR __y = SUM ( Table[Growth] )
RETURN
__x + __y
In the above expression __x and __y are variables. I hope it helps.

@Anonymous in case of live connection (in this case), you cannot make changes to the model. Any addition/change you need, you need to do in the source dataset (published dataset).

So since the source publishing to power bi has this variable as a date, but doesn't have an option to make hierarchical, as i would imagine most sources wouldn't, it is impossible for me to make it hierarchical for now?
@Anonymous first thing first, you need to use the proper name, it is not a variable, it is a column, the variable has a very different meaning.
Now to your question, you have to create hierarchy int he model (published dataset), you cannot make changes to the model if you are doing a live connection.

Im following, for future reference what would be the difference then between a column and a variable?
