Make Power BI recognize callto: function as a hyperlink

Hello there,

I currently want to create an in-house tool, where each coworker can see where everyone else is located. We have integrated Teams as our standard method of communication, so I have added the callto: Links for each employee. However, now I saw that Power BI so far does not recognize the callto: function as a hyperlink, making it thus impossible to use the effective hyperlink

As Teams is also a Microsoft product, I was wondering if a) there will be an update on this b) if there is a workaround?

Any help is highly appreciated

Best regards

Nico

Hi, @ntf1992

To make the Power BI development team find and develop this new function, you can go to the Ideas to vote for your idea(Is this idea submitted by you?):

https://ideas.powerbi.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=3d9fd9d6-923b-eb11-8fed-281878bd9103

I’ve also voted for this idea.🙂

Hi Robert,

yes, indeed, this idea was submitted by me. Thank you for your support 😀

I just think that not a lot of people will vote on this idea, because it is a very specific function.

There was already a similar idea in 2017: https://ideas.powerbi.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=254674e3-6ebc-44bf-b950-4f0385f84323 , but to no avail. I really hope the developers pick this up, because it would be a minute change with such great changes for a lot of users.

Thanks for your help and support

Hi, @ntf1992

You can not use callto function as a hyperlink to insert into the Power BI reports, because hyperlinks that can be used in Power BI should start with one of the following:

  • http
  • https
  • mailto
  • ftp
  • news
  • telnet

Regarding to connection of Power BI and Teams, they are both built on Office 365 groups, so we can view and interact with Power Bi reports in Teams easily.

Dear Robert Qin,

thank you for the answer. I know that callto so far is not recgonized as a hyperlink for PowerBI. However, this makes no sense for me if I want to integrate a callfunction within a power BI report. I know that users can comment through Teams on PowerBI reports and share them, but this is not what I am trying to do.

I want people to be able to open a Teams call through PowerBI.

Why is the mailto function supported by PowerBI and callto is not? Would this not be very easy to simply update and add to the list of recognized PowerBI hyperlinks.

All the best

Nico

Ditto. Enabling features like this makes power bi more than just a reporting tool. The example I have is that a cross-sell report I've created for our customer base. Each BDM has access to the report and can see a list of their accounts and the potential cross-sell opportunity for other product. I created a drill-through page so the reps can see the contacts for a customers account and I wanted them to be able to click to call on the drill-through page, but they can't. Instead I have opted to link the customer record in the CRM so they can click to call through there. Not the greatest outcome as they need to go into a separate webpage to initiate the contact.
