Just getting started - Colums
We would need to see the structure of your table(s) to be able to provide adequate help.
However, and hazarding a guess here, if you have a column for open/closed, try dragging that to the legend bucket in the formatting pane of the clustered column visual
Refer to my blog which deals with such two dates. Here Opened is Hire, Closed is termination and Open(not closed) is current
