Import vs Direct Query

Hi,

I would like to do reports using Direct Query but I found out a lot of limitation such as setting up DAX formulas in the table view is impossible.

Let's say if I have a table called ABC and it's extracted from SQL Server using Direct Query, then I put a simple DAX like the below:

ABC = ABC2

Power BI will automatically create a mirror version of the same ABC table and replicate as ABC2. By doing so, ABC2 will be automatically switched to Import instead of Direct Query and I can add whatever columns or DAX calculations in ABC2 with a fully visible of table view.

As table ABC is using Direct Query while ABC2 is using Import, my question is whether ABC2 can still enjoy the real-time update of data refresh as Direct Query?

Best regards,

Emily

Hi, @Anonymous

Based on my tests, ABC2 can't enjoy the real-time update of data refresh as Direct Query beacuse its store mode is import.

I changed the last record's 'Name' column as 'Y' in Sql Server.

When you interact with or rebuild the table visual with Direct Query mode, it enjoyed the real-time update of data refresh. While the table visual with import mode didn't change. It is still 'G'.

@Anonymous , the refresh will import data for import mode. but I doubt that will get new data automatically every time like direct query
