Import/Manipulate data from Analysis Services / Data Cube

Hi all,

I hope I post this in the right category.

I have a problem which I need your help with.

We have stored data in several cubes and I want to build reports based on the data of the cubes.

So these are multidimensional cubes, so I have to connect to them via the Analysis Services.

I worked previously with QlikSense/View and I'm used to load the data into Qlik and manipulating it in the Load Editor or with specific measures.

Now if I try to "import" the data it takes more than ages and I think I don't have enough power for that on my current laptop (the cubes have millions of rows).

If I just do a LiveConnect I can only "look" and visualize but can't really do anything.

So I'm thinking of loading the data into a table/multiple tables and then connect with PowerBI to these tables.

So I am able to do things (create a data model, add a mastercalender etc.).

Do you have any suggestion on how to do that or do you have any different idea?

Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Smokey24 ,

Yes. If you connect to AS with live connection, it means that no data from the tabular model is imported into Power BI Desktop. We get data and relationships from AS directly. You could view the data that is available in AS.

For more details, suggest you to take a good look at the document:Connect to Analysis Services tabular data in Power BI Desktop .

  • Different idea. Since I’m loading out of a cube there should be already an internal data model. There are measures and the dimensions.

So if I load the measures in on table and the dimensions in a separate table I would have a fact table with the measures and dim tables.

My question is, if I do load it this way are the tables connected? Meaning I would have a sum in the fact table i.e. 1000000 and the stores in a dim table.
Is it then still possible to to say see which store sold how much? So I would have a list of stores and their respective sales?

i am facing the same issue, with huge data in the cube. did you find any solution, can you please help if you find solution ? my question is also same, if i import table separately and then create model in power bi level will it work ?
