Images not displaying when plotting the column with UNC path, while works to insert directly

Dear Support,

My images are stored on a network server. They are not displaying when I tried to plot the column with UNC paths in it using card, multi-row card, table or tablix. It works when I test inserting the image from Insert > Image > type in the UNC path in the address box

The UNC path is formatted like this:  ( " \\NetworkServer\folder\subfolder\filename.jpg ") . The UNC column has been changes to Text data type and Image URL data category.

This issue happened both in Power BI desktop and in service. The root folder of the UNC path has been added to gateway.

What should I troubleshoot for? Will there be any issues to share the dashboard publicly in the next step? Thank you!

Best,

Phoebe

Hi @Anonymous ,

Here ‘s an image link for your test to make sure the point is not about the version of desktop you used:

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/6047i8C8157EC4645A11A/image-size/large?v=1.0&px=600

If you’d like to add the url link to image, you'll need to save the image file online and link to it. Make sure special credentials aren't required to access the image file. For example, OneDrive and SharePoint require authentication, so images stored there can't be added in this way.

But there’s a solution when you need the image stored in Onerdrive/Sharepoint, please refer to the solved case for details: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Image-viewer-working-for-Web-URL-not-for-One-Drive-or-SharePoint/td-p/469510

If the problem is still not resolved, please provide detailed error information or the expected result you expect. Let me know immediately, looking forward to your reply.

Best Regards,
Winniz

Thank you for your solution. It still won't let me use a UNC path but it works fine with http path.

However I came across another issue. The images are display in a matrix that has the value linked to the column with image URLs. The images are showing correctly in Power BI Desktop and in service. However it doesn't show when open the report from public embed code. I tested to insert a static image using one of the URLs and it worked in all three cases - PBI desktop, service and public embed.

What can be the potential issues?

Hi @Anonymous ,

I use the matrix visual in the report, and then publish the report to the web, the image can still be displayed. Can you open the image in the browser using only the URL?

This is my test link. embed code

Hi, I want to follow up on this question. Is that possible to add the images local path to the dataset and display the image in a table using that local path column? For some reasons we are not able to put the images on a public website. But we're able to install and configure the gateway on the image server and wanted to share the images through gateway using the local file path. Will this be a working solution?

Hi @Anonymous ,

Try below link to make local images to be shown in a visual:

Import images in Power BI from local sources

Reference Local Image URL in the visual

Thank you Winniz for the response.

I tried the trick in the first post but it ended up with a limiation on the image size so my images are only showing the 20% of the full image from the top. Also, I will need a more dynamic way to build the folder path by refereing to a table or file, because I have my images stored in many different subfolders under a network drive and they keep updating everyday. In this method, it requires to enter a static folder link in the first place which I can't.

For the second post, I'm not sure I understand what it means by "host the folder in which you have images on IIS"? Can you please elaborate more?

Thank you,

Phoebe
