Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm having difficulties grasping the concepts around DP-900. They are so many tools and techniques to ingest and manage the data that I can't wrap my head around. I did the learning path on Microsoft Learn website. Just did the assessment exam and I got a 76% but I don't feel that I understand the concepts.
I did the ITExamsPRO practice test and failed. I passed the AZ-900 some weeks ago and the CISSP with flying colors. For some weird reasons, I find the DP-900 series exams way more difficult than the CISSP exam or the AZ-900.
What am I doing wrong ? Am I having the right approach?
Resources I'm using and planning to use :
MS Learning Path for DP-900 (completed);
Exam Ref Dp-900 Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals;
MC Microsoft Certified Azure Data Fundamentals Study Guide: Exam DP-900.

(In progress) DP-900 Data Fundamentals Study Cram v2 by John Savill's Technical Training.
Today I Passed my DP-900 exam very first attempt. All the credit goes to (Pass Exam Hub) as it has 100% real questions available.
Thanks for the reply from FarhanJeelani.

Hi @BenDepp4311 ,
It sounds like you've done a lot of preparation for DP-900 already, but the challenge you're facing is understandable. DP-900 has a broader range of data-specific topics compared to the foundational AZ-900 or CISSP exams, which can make it feel more overwhelming, especially if you’re not primarily from a data management background. Here are some strategies to help you approach DP-900 more effectively:
1. Break Down the Key Concepts
DP-900 covers the core areas of data fundamentals, including relational databases, non-relational databases, big data, and data analytics on Azure. Instead of focusing on each service individually, focus on understanding the concepts behind these categories. For example:
- Relational vs. Non-Relational Databases: Understand when to use SQL databases versus NoSQL options like Cosmos DB.
- Batch vs. Streaming Data: Know the difference between Azure Stream Analytics (real-time) and Azure Data Factory (batch).
- Structured vs. Unstructured Data: Get comfortable with what kind of data fits into which category and the best tools to manage each.
Revisiting the Microsoft Learn content might be beneficial here, especially if you go back with a focus on understanding these broader distinctions rather than individual service features.
2. Use Visual Learning Techniques
Azure’s range of tools and services can seem like a huge list, but they can make more sense when you view them as a “pipeline.” Mapping out how data flows from ingestion to transformation and storage to analysis in a diagram could help. Consider using mind maps or flowcharts to organize Azure services by their role in the data lifecycle. This might also help you remember them based on their functional groups rather than as individual services.
3. Practice With Hands-On Labs
Reading alone can make DP-900 concepts feel abstract, so try experimenting with hands-on labs to reinforce your understanding. Since you’re already using the Microsoft Learn path, you might try going beyond the assessments by:
- Setting up a free Azure account and working directly in the portal to create services (e.g., setting up a small SQL database, experimenting with Cosmos DB, creating a Stream Analytics job).
- Exploring platforms like Azure Lab Services or Microsoft Learn Sandbox to gain practical experience with data services. Hands-on practice helps deepen your grasp of how data services work, even at a fundamentals level.
4. Focus on Exam Scenarios
DP-900 exam questions often center on understanding the “why” and “when” to use different tools, rather than just definitions. Try approaching your study from a problem-solving perspective:
- For each topic, ask yourself: “What’s the business scenario where I would choose this service?” This approach can make abstract concepts feel more concrete.
- Exam Ref books or online resources with scenario-based questions can be great for building this type of thinking. You might find that John Savill’s videos, in particular, provide context for how different tools are used in real scenarios.
5. Review Each Wrong Answer
For your Whizlabs and Microsoft practice tests, reviewing each wrong answer in detail can be one of the most powerful ways to close knowledge gaps. Identify patterns in the questions you’re missing. For example:
- If you’re consistently missing questions about data ingestion, consider revisiting content on Azure Synapse, Data Factory, or Stream Analytics.
- If you’re missing questions on data storage options, focus on the differences between Cosmos DB, Azure SQL, and blob storage, and review when to use each.
6. Prioritize Core Topics Over Details
With DP-900, especially if data management is new to you, it’s easy to get lost in the details. Focus on core concepts, like:
- Types of Databases and Use Cases: Familiarize yourself with relational, NoSQL, and distributed databases.
- Data Processing Methods: Be clear on batch processing vs. streaming, and tools that align with each.
- Analytics Services: Understand how Power BI, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Machine Learning fit into the data ecosystem.
7. Consider Shorter Study Sessions with Frequent Reviews
Breaking up your study time into shorter, more frequent sessions can help cement your understanding. At the end of each day, quickly review key points you covered to reinforce retention. This can reduce the cognitive load when studying so much new material and help you feel less overwhelmed.
Suggested Next Steps:
- Continue watching John Savill’s videos, focusing on parts where you struggled in practice exams.
- Go back to your Whizlabs or MS Learn practice tests and focus on the “why” behind each question’s correct answer.
- Add some light hands-on practice in the Azure portal to reinforce conceptual understanding.
With these strategies, you should find the concepts becoming more approachable and easier to retain. You’re on the right path, and with a bit more targeted focus, you’ll be ready to conquer DP-900!
