How to keep bookmarks updated when data in dropdown slicer changes?

@GuyInACube @lbendlin

@Nathaniel_C @amitchandak

@v-angzheng-msft @sirlanceohlott @AllisonKennedy

@MFelix @bcdobbs

Hi,

Below is my dataset

Akshay_Kinge_1-1641897739031.png

I have two pages. The 1st Page has Price details of each of the fruits being shown in a Gauge Visual for each fruit. On the filter pane, Fruit_id is used as a filter to show the price.

On the second page details of 1 selected fruit are shown.

To Achieve Navigation from the 1st page to the 2nd Page, I have created transparent button and placed it on top of the Gauges.

On the 2nd Page, from the dropdown slicer I selected a Fruit_Name and created a bookmark. I have assigned this bookmark navigation as the action of the button on the 1st Page.I Repeated this for all the fruits.

Now, If the data changes say, id 3 – Papaya is replaced with Sweet Lime, the Navigation will happen however there will be Papaya selected which actually is removed and no data will be visible.

In this case I manually have to recreate the Sweet Lime bookmark or update the existing Papaya Bookmark.

Is there any way I can use Fruit_id to create the bookmark and not show the id on the page while still keeping the dropdown slicer on Fruit_name?

I tried using Filter Pane with Fruit_id to create the bookmark, however once data is changed, Papaya is selected and Sweet Lime appears as another menu option.

Any help on this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

@Anonymous , @MFelix  has good suggestion, otherwise can you use Fruit Name in the filter pane instead of Fruit ID?

Hi @AllisonKennedy,

The question is exactly that. The name cannot be used on the filter because it can change and then break the filtering so needs to be by ID.

Hi,

Below is my Page 1 –

Here I have a Gauge for each Fruit

To Make each gauge show price of One Fruit, Fruit ID is mapped in the Filter Pane.

On top of these gauges are transparent buttons placed. These buttons navigate to the specific Bookmarks.

Akshay_Kinge_1-1641906528913.png

Refer below Page 2 and the Bookmarks Pane –

Akshay_Kinge_2-1641906528927.png

Since Bookmark here is created on the Fruit Name Slicer, if the fruit name is changed, this bookmark will not show any data.

I am looking for ways to keep the visualization as it is but using Id to create bookmark such that even if the fruit name changes, it does not have an impact on the visualization

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous ,

In this case you should use the drilltrough option and not the bookmarks:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-drillthrough

This will allow to keep the filter context based on the fields you select for the drilltrough, then this can be assined also to a button.

Hi @MFelix ,

I am using guage visual.

Drillthrough is not available as an option for this visual.

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous ,

The drill trough options is available for all visuals, if you use the metric that you use on the Gauge chart on the drill trough page you will be abble to make it.

Has you can see below the gauge is filter to a single Level selected:

MFelix_1-1641913399136.png

The detail has several levels:

MFelix_2-1641913423929.png

When I place the Measure that I'm using on the Gauge chart has a drill trough:

MFelix_3-1641913463159.png

It get's available on the Gauge chart and returns correct result.

MFelix_4-1641913504200.pngMFelix_5-1641913516111.png

If you have more measure to use in the drill trough you can place them all. (This also works for cards and similar visualizations).

Hi  @MFelix ,

Thanks for the workaround.
The application users are used to the one-click functionality . Is there any other way to achieve this ?

Hi @Anonymous ,

You need to go to the second page based on the bookmark and then be abble to change the 2nd page based on  slicer if you need?

Yes, that's correct.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Is there any issue if you have a button to clear the slicer from the button of the previous page? Or would this create a problem with the usage of the report?

When you use bookmarks (especially data related) the information gets "frozen" so you need to use another bookmark to return to normal behaviour, if you are abble to accept this then you can add a filter on the page filter (hidden) with the ID you need for each bookmark associated with the buttons on the other page.

Then create a bookmark on the second page without any ID selected, and add a button to your page when the user selects that bookmark the slicer allows other selections.

Hi @MFelix ,

I highly appreciate your response. Will it be possible for you to demonstrate this using a sample PBIX file and sample data as I have mentioned above.

Also , could you please elaborate further on what you meant by these lines,
"if you are abble to accept this then you can add a filter on the page filter (hidden) with the ID you need for each bookmark associated with the buttons on the other page.

Then create a bookmark on the second page without any ID selected, and add a button to your page when the user selects that bookmark the slicer allows other selections."

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Anonymous ,

I have made a small sample, has you can check on the second page I have placed the ID on the filter page and then made a bookmark for no selection, a bookmark for ID1, ID2 and ID3.

Then you just need to add the first one to a button that filter out the first selction.

Hi @MFelix ,

Thanks for your solution. However, this is not working as expected in my scenario.
Below are couple of points I want to highlight:
1. The last ID used to create the bookmark is retained and all the button actions lead to that bookmark.
2.While creating bookmarks, I cannot keep "All visuals" selected because one of these visuals is a date slicer and I want it to be synced across pages.

Thanks for your help.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Regarding your questions please see my comments below:

1. Don't understand what you mean by this, in the file I have setup the buttons lead to different bookmarks that have different ID. What is the meaning of the sentance?

2. In this case you select the visuals you need matrix and slicer of fruits and select the option on the bookmark "Selected visuals" that way the Date slicer will not be impacted. That way the Data of the bookmarks will be kept only for the selected visuals

Hi, @MFelix ,

"The last ID used to create the bookmark is retained and all the button actions lead to that bookmark."
By this I mean, If I create 3 bookmarks for IDs 1,2,3 each and bookmark with ID 3 is the most recent one. This ID = 3 filter is retained on the page and even when actions of the buttons are set to navigate to bookmarks with ID 1 or ID 2, the user is navigated to the details page with ID 3 being selected.

One major observation I have seen is that this problem only occurs when the boomarks are created with "Selected Visuals" option.

Any help on this is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Please try to update the involved bookmarks as below screenshot:

yingyinr_1-1642754910938.png

In addition, please review the content in the following links, hope they can help you.

Bookmarks - selected visuals

bookmark not updating

Bookmark with Selected Visuals no longer "remembers" which visuals are visible/hidden

Best Regards

Hi @Anonymous ,

I cannot replicate this, occurence, when I setup the bookmarks they are working properly when you call them, only question (but that happens with all bokkmarks) is that if you navigate manually trough the pages the last bookmark yhou used, it can be all, 1, 2 or 3 will be kept but that is a PowerBI feature, in this case when I do this type of user experience I hide the page where the bookmarks are and the user can only go to it from the main page.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Do you hav anything against having a button on the second page to clear the filter so you can "activate" the slicer?

Or does this messes with the user experience?
