How to Handle Multiple Bookmark Interactions for Different Visual Sections in Power BI?

I have a Power BI report where I’ve set up 5 buttons, each connected to different bookmarks. These buttons control two separate sections of the report:

1. The first 3 buttons toggle between a Pie Chart, Bar Chart, and Line Chart in one section.

2. The other 2 buttons toggle between a Bar Chart and Line Chart in a different section.

The issue I’m facing is that when I click one of the buttons for the first section (Pie, Bar, Line), it affects the second section (Bar, Line) and vice versa. This leads to an undesired reset of visual selections for each section when switching between them.

Is there a way to make these bookmark buttons interact independently so that clicking a button in one section doesn’t overwrite the visual selection in the other section? Ideally, I’d like to select one bookmark for each section and have them both active at the same time.

What’s the best way to achieve this in Power BI? Could combining bookmarks or using selection panes be a solution? Any guidance would be appreciated!

Hi @julsr ,

I suggest using the Selected Visuals option in the bookmark to save the states of only selected visualizations.

I don't quite understand what you mean by sections. I think it would be easier to advise you if you sent/showed an example of how bookmarks work.

Hope this helps. The two sections consist of two grouped visualizations, and the buttons are at the top. Each button in each section must change the visualization below it without affecting the other group. Using the Selected Visuals option, I can’t achieve this because, by default, some visualizations overlap others. I haven’t found a way to automatically maintain the selections made by the user in each group. (the black numbers are the number of visuals that are within each group)

Hmm, if the term bookmarks are responsible for the visualizations on the left, and the Card bookmarks for those on the right, and additionally in the sections the visualizations are overlapped in the right way, then Selected Visual should be able to handle it without any problems.

Please send descriptions of situations that may occur or send a .pbix file with an example, then I can describe it in more detail.

Yes, you’re right about the bookmarks utilization. For example, if the user selects Term Balance and then Card Count, but in the Selection Option the visualization for Term% is placed above Term Balance (and that’s how the bookmark for Card Count was saved), it will ignore the user’s selection of Term Balance and display Term% instead, because that’s how the hierarchy was set for Card Count. This could happen with all the buttons as they're saved in a different way and they are not responsive based on the selection of the user for the section.

What is above or below is set in the selection panel and theoretically has nothing to do with bookmarks.

From what you wrote, it appears that bookmarks from the card section also affect the Term section (they have the state of these visualizations saved) - correct me if I'm wrong.

If this is really the case, then to try to set the bookmarks correctly, you first need to write down all the possible combinations that you would like to be visible, and then try to match the bookmark settings to this.

In my opinion, this is possible (as long as the bookmarks are not mutually exclusive), but you need to write down the cases.

I identified the issue:

1. Switch from ‘All Visuals’ to ‘Selected Visuals.’

2. In the Visualization Panel, select the visuals impacted by the bookmark and hide the ones not needed. Once the desired behavior is set, update the bookmark.

Yes, you’re right. However, I haven’t found a way to control the positioning of the visualizations. For example, in the Term Balance bookmark and Card Count bookmark, the bar chart is in front of the line chart. So if a user selects Term % (which brings the line chart to the front), and then selects Card Count, the bar chart (as saved in the Card Count bookmark) will move to the front, hiding the line chart. I’m not sure how to prevent this issue with graphics moving to the back/front based on how they were saved in each bookmark.
