Getting data schema from pbix file

Hi all,

Is it possible to automatically (using bash or python for example) get schema of data that is used by PowerBI report?

I know pbix files can be unpact and there is a lot of informations about report but I couldn't find names of tables and columns. Am I missing something? Or maybe those informations are not stored there?

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm not so sure what you mean can you please explain more about this?

In addition, you can also take a look at following blog which told about use excel or ssms to connection power bi data model instances, this instance should include all table schema and records which power bi used.

Hi @Anonymous,

Sure, so I have a PowerBI report which is getting data from Azure Analysis Service. Both of these are pretty complicated (there is a lot of tables and views in AAS and couple of widgets in report). And because of it I'd like to create some tests for checking compability of report and model. To do that I'd want to somehow get schema of data used in report and just compare it with schema from Model.bim. By schema I mean names of tables and columns within them, maybe also relations but not necessarily.

HI @Anonymous,

AFAIK, current analysis service support import and live connection mode to get data.

For import mode, it require your to get data to power bi and will break existed your table relationships and data type.

For Live connection mode, it will disable most of edit features include the relationship panel and query editor.

So I think it is hard to achieve your requirement through power bi desktop.
