For Beginners to start

Hi everyone,

I am a computer science student and new to Power BI.
I have started learning Power BI through Microsoft Learn modules.

Could you please suggest the correct beginner learning order
and key topics to focus on in Power BI Desktop (data modeling, visuals, basics of DAX)?

    If I were teaching report development the way it's typically done from scratch, I'd begin with data transformation and preparation in Power Query (if data isn't in the proper shape yet or  there are rows and columns that aren't needed or don't exist at the source), followed by data modelling (building relationships), then creating visuals, and finally writing DAX measures. That sequence provides a solid foundation and is generally easier to follow when learning the basics.

     

    That said, real-world report development is rarely that linear. In practice, you'll often find yourself moving back and forth between these areas. For example, building a visual might reveal that you need a new DAX measure, which then uncovers the need to adjust your data model or make additional transformations in Power Query. Developing Power BI reports is usually an iterative process rather than a strict step-by-step workflow.

  • Hi Nayan2013  As a beginner to the analytics platform you can start understanding about the Statistics concepts. Then from Power BI appliation, understand the Power BI ecosystem of Desktop, Service, Mobile. Get familiar with the interface having Report view, Data view, Model view. Learn how to connect to basic data sources like Excel, CSV files.

     

    Importing and shaping data. Common transformations: remove columns, filter rows, change data types, merge and append queries. Understand the difference between Import and Direct Query.

     

    Star schema and snowflake schema. Creating relationships between tables with cardinality, cross-filter direction. Fact tables and dimension tables.

     

    Start with simple calculated columns and measures. Learn the functions of SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, CALCULATE, FILTER. Understand row context and filter context. Then you can move on to Time intelligence functions.

     

    Learn commonly used visuals like bar or column charts, line charts, cards, slicers, tables and matrix. Formatting and interactivity like drill-through, bookmarks, tooltips then start building a dashboard

     

    Also you can participate in the monthly Data Challenges from Onyx Data, FP20 Analytics Challenges Group, etc (you can check for the updates in their LinkedIn page for more info) to showcase your learnings and building an insightful report.

    A good learning order is

    1. Power BI interface and basic report creation
    2. Data import and Power Query (cleaning & transformation)
    3. Data modeling (relationships, star schema, cardinality)
    4. Visualizations and report design best practices
    5. DAX fundamentals (measures, calculated columns, CALCULATE, FILTER)
    6. Time intelligence functions (YTD, MTD, QTD, SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR)
    7. Publishing reports and Power BI services
    8. Row-Level Security (RLS) and data refresh
    9. Performance optimization and best practices
    10. Build end-to-end projects to apply everything you've learned

    Welcome to the Power BI community! Since you're just getting started, Microsoft Learn is an excellent place to build a strong foundation.

    A recommended learning path is:

    • Understand the Power BI ecosystem (Power BI Desktop, Service, and Mobile).

    • Learn how to connect to data sources and use Power Query for data cleaning and transformation.

    • Study data modeling, including relationships, star schema, and normalization concepts.

    • Create basic visualizations and learn report design best practices.

    • Learn DAX fundamentals, starting with calculated columns, measures, and common functions such as SUM, CALCULATE, FILTER, and IF.

    • Explore publishing reports to the Power BI Service, sharing, and scheduled refresh.

    • Once you're comfortable with the basics, start learning advanced topics such as performance optimization, Row-Level Security (RLS), deployment pipelines, and Microsoft Fabric integration.

    For learning resources:

    My biggest recommendation is to build small projects alongside your learning. Working with real datasets (such as sales, HR, finance, or healthcare) will help you understand data modeling and DAX much faster than theory alone.
