Follow the (BLANK)

Follow The BLANK

As an upcoming coming Power BI Developer, one thing I wrestled with (besides mastering filter context) is the dreaded (BLANK) on a report page visual or a blank row in a table or matrix.  For those outside this field, this is an error response from the DAX engine.

In my early days, I was tempted to simply filter those results out.  It cleans things up, but it really only hides the error(s).

I've now grown to a point where I love the (BLANK).  Just today while running a data comparison inside a report I noticed some blank rows.   I followed the trail of the (BLANK) and it led me to an oversight in my data model.  A few minutes in Power Query and the problem was solved - no more (BLANK).

(BLANK) is a very powerful ally and can teach you many things if you are willing to swallow your pride, be coachable and dig in.
