Exchange direct lake connection from a Power BI report from one warehouse to another warehouse

Hi everyone,

I have created a Power BI report with a direct lake connection to warehouse A. I now need to replace the direct lake connection to warehouse A by a direct lake connection to another warehouse (warehouse B). The reason for this is that I don't want to rebuild the whole report again, as a lot of work has gone into formatting the visuals.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

First create a backup

Steps to Replace the Connection:

  1. Open Power BI Desktop: Load your existing report that is currently connected to warehouse A.

  2. Go to “Transform Data”:

    • In Power BI Desktop, go to the Home tab, and click on Transform data to open Power Query Editor.
  3. Locate the Source Step:

    • In Power Query Editor, navigate to the Queries pane on the left-hand side and select the query that is using the connection to warehouse A.
    • In the query steps, find the first step (usually named Source) where the connection to warehouse A is established.
  4. Edit the Source Connection:

    • Click on the gear icon next to the Source step.
    • In the window that appears, replace the connection information (such as the server name, database name, or credentials) for warehouse A with the details for warehouse B.
    • If your connection details are stored in a separate data source (e.g., Azure, SQL), ensure that you update the appropriate credentials and path.
  5. Test the New Connection:

    • After updating the connection to warehouse B, press Close & Apply to apply the changes and load data from the new warehouse into your report.
  6. Adjust for Schema Changes (if needed):

    • If the schema (tables, columns, or data types) in warehouse B is different from warehouse A, you may need to adjust some queries or mappings.
    • If the structure is the same, Power BI will refresh using the new connection without requiring any further modifications.
  7. Save the Report: After making sure everything is working properly with the new connection, save your report.

Hi , Hope you are doing good!

You can replace the Direct Lake connection to another warehouse in Power BI without rebuilding the report:

  1. Open Power BI Desktop: Load your report file.
  2. Transform Data: Go to "Home" > "Transform Data."
  3. Edit Source: Select the query linked to Warehouse A, edit the "Source" step, and change the connection to Warehouse B.
  4. Close & Apply: Save changes and refresh the data.

Ensure Warehouse B has a similar schema to avoid breaking visuals or relationships.

Hi @Janica123

Agree with elitesmitpatel.

Also, you can try change data source in "Data source settings".

1. Open Power BI Desktop: launch Power BI Desktop and open your report file.

2. Change data source settings:
In Power BI Desktop, click the File menu and select Options and Settings.
Select Data Source Settings.
In the Data Source Settings window, locate the currently connected Warehouse A and click Change Source.

3. Refresh Data: Click the Refresh button to make sure that all data is loaded from the new Warehouse B.
