I am using an area chart (see screen shot). The users have requested the ability to click on a month and see the data in a pop-up with the numbers for that month, so if they click on Jun 2020, they would the values used in that visual for all of June. If they selected July, it would perform that action. I am trying to research this, but not sure exactly the search terms and hoping someone could help me out with either what I need to search upon, or guidance through doing it.

As Tahreem24 said, I also think report page tooltip should suitable for your requirement. Please double-check on your visual to confirm you not use the clustered filed as report tooltip keys:
