Do Data Source and Gateway Credentials Have To Match?

Hi, So I'm using one set of credentials in desktop to access the data and create a report, but these credentials are different from the gateway which we have running on a VM, pointing at the same DB. Both sets of credentials are able to access the DB. Would I need to make sure that they are using the same credentials?
