Hello
When you upgrade the version of power bi Desktop to September 2025, when you update tables in a report in directquerty, they are not updated, only the schema is updated.
In the new version, the Update option appears and is shaded in Data, and only updates the schema.
I have tested on another computer with the August 2025 desktop version and it updates correctly. I'm looking at options but I can't get the directquery tables updated.
Does it happen to anyone too?
Solved! Go to Solution.
The only way to fix it has been to revert to the previous version of Power BI Desktop.

Hi @Syndicate_Admin ,
Thank you for confirming.
For now, the best solution is to revert to the August 2025 version until a fix becomes available. It’s also a good idea to report this issue as a bug on the official Power BI Feedback portal as said earlier so the product team can address it.
It doesn't help me at all, because the data part is disabled and doesn't update the table in directquery, I had to downgrade the version to the one from August2025 to be able to update it normally. I think it's a bug from the latest version.
Hi @Syndicate_Admin ,
The issue with DirectQuery not updating in the latest Power BI Desktop version can be mitigated by reverting to a stable release, such as August 2025, where data refresh functions as expected. It is advisable to report this bug to the Microsoft Fabric/Power BI team through the official Feedback portal or the Fabric community thread to facilitate a resolution in future updates. In the interim, consider using Import mode for critical updates and testing DirectQuery updates in Power BI Service, as the issue may be limited to Desktop previews. Retaining a copy of the last stable version, reviewing release notes for hotfixes, collecting diagnostic logs, and sharing your experiences in the community can also support proactive issue management and contribute to a quicker resolution.
Hi @Syndicate_Admin ,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.
This issue pertains to the September 2025 Power BI Desktop update. Microsoft has separated schema synchronization and data refresh for DirectQuery sources:
Sync schema: updates only the model structure.
Refresh data: retrieves the latest rows while maintaining the schema.
In your report, selecting Update only syncs the schema, which is why new data is not displayed.
Recommended workarounds:
Use the Refresh button to load new data instead of Update.
If Refresh is unavailable, re-create the table in DirectQuery mode.
Alternatively, you may temporarily revert to the August 2025 Desktop version until further improvements are released by Microsoft.

Hi @Syndicate_Admin ,
I hope the information provided above assists you in resolving the issue. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to support you and will be happy to help with any further assistance you may need.
Hi @Syndicate_Admin - You can choose to Sync schema only (just update model schema to match the data source)Or Refresh data only, while preserving the existing schema in your semantic model.

It implies that Power BI has separated schema syncing and data refresh behaviors more explicitly. It appears the UI now sometimes shows only the schema option (or defaults to schema), depending on how the table was created or what type (DirectQuery / DAX).
Hope this helps.
