Direct Query JSON not properly formatted error

I am attempting to connect to a table in SQL. Using Import mode, the connection is fine and I am able to use the data in the report. However, when attempting to use Direct Query (restarting and creating a fresh data source using Direct Query), I get an error in my visuals that use that table:

This happens when I just attempt to create a blank table visual and pull in one of the columns. The data source does not include any JSON data from what I can tell, so I don't understand where the JSON part of the error could be coming from. I am also confused as to why direct query would not work when import does.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @AmstutzG1 ,

After testing, I did not reproduce a similar situation. Since your data source is SQL, I would suggest that you go back to SQL Server Management Studio and open up the SQL Server profiler and reproduce your issue to see if you can catch any error messages.

The error does not produce in SQL Server, it seems very specific to Power BI. After some more testing in Power BI, it seems very "buggy" in nature and produces an error sometimes but not others. Haven't been able to track down exactly what causes it in Power BI.
