Desktop in English but publish in local language

Goodday,

I ran into a problem today. I have my Powerbi Desktop in english as i like it the best and i know what is everything is called. But a customer wants their dashboard in my local language, so that things like filters do not say "Select all".

I found that changing my desktop language to the local one before publishing fixes this, but i dont want to do that. How do i publish in local but work in english?

Hi @Rollow ,

I totally understand your situation, and just to visually confirm how the language override works, I tested the same Power BI report using different ?language= codes in the URL. Here's what I observed.
1. Japanese (?language=ja-JP)

The Power BI menu displays in Japanese
ファイル (File), エクスポート (Export), 編集 (Edit) ---This shows that the language override is working correctly.Vyubandimsft_0-1752220900912.png

Again, the language changed as expected.

Hi @Rollow ,

Thank you again for reaching out. You mentioned wanting the dashboard to display in the local language for end users, while keeping your Power BI Desktop interface in English. As shown in the screenshot below, the report is now displayed in Dutch.

FYI:

UI text such as filter messages (Er zijn geen filters om weer te geven) now appears in the local language, showing that the locale settings are working correctly.

This was achieved by using the Power BI Service language override (nl-NL), so you can publish in the customers language and continue developing in English.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need any more adjustments or support. happy to help.

I have changed the service language now, but dashboards still upload in english.

Tbf the whole page is still in english which is weird.

Hello @Rollow

try this

Set Language in Power BI Report Itself, Not Desktop

Instead of changing your Power BI Desktop language, do this:

Set Report Language Metadata

In Power BI Desktop:

Go to File > Options and Settings > Options

Under Current File > Regional Settings

Change the Locale to the customer’s local language (e.g., Dutch – Netherlands).

This does not change your interface language in Power BI Desktop.
But it tells Power BI to render locale-specific UI strings (like slicer labels, number/date formatting) in that locale when viewed in Power BI Service.

Thanks

I am unable to do this as Current file says "This file has a live connection to another model"
We use Semantic Models from Tabular Editor as data source.

Hello @Rollow

try this

Change the Report Language in Power BI Service:

Go to the report in Power BI Service (app.powerbi.com)

Click the "…" (More options) > Settings

In the Report Settings, locate the "Language" or "Default locale" option (varies slightly based on workspace type and report setup)

Set it to the desired local language (e.g., Dutch, French, German)

Refresh the report

Under the three dots i dont see settings, and the settings under file doesnt have language.

On top of that, new reports i upload should also immeadetely get the new language. So changing it per report is sadly not a solution
