Desktop API / RLS Question

Hi Everyone,

I am compariing Power BI to Qlik Sense and wanted to get clarification on if a Power BI capability exists.

Neither Power BI nor Qlik Sense support Row-Level Security within the Desktop Client.

However, sometimes there still exists a need to provide a stripped down version of a PBIX file for Desktop use (i.e. a sales person who should only see their expenses is traveling and wants to view the data offline). This can easily be achieved by filtering the underlying data beforehand, thus the PBI desktop file only contains their data - problem solved. However, this is a lot of overhead of we go from 1 person to 100 people.

Qlik's approach to managing this issue is to use an API engine that will automatically generate copies of the desktop file that are filtered on a named dimension (like employee), thus automating the process of what I mentioned int the previous paragraph.

I was just curious if there is a 3rd party tool that exists to do this for Power BI.

I know that Power BI supports offline capability through a mobile device, but it isn't realistiv to analyze some data on a mobile device, and not everyone has a larger tablet.

Thanks!

Hi @Brysonds,

I haven't heard any APIs who can directly operate power bi desktop data model.

AFAIK, power bi data model is stored in AS instance, maybe you can refer to use following link to know how connect to power bi data model and export data.

Thank you for the information! I will look into this to see if this can be leveraged as a solution.
