Data connectivity mode refresh

Hi,

We have an Azure SQL database and I chosse "Data Connectivity mode Import" when creating a new dataset. How often will the data be refreshed - is the option to set this done via Power Bi Services:

So if I set the update to be done at 8am every day, Power Bi will check Azure SQL Database for new enteries and update  report with it? And if I dont set a schelue I will need to manual use the "Refresh" button in Power Bi Desktop to get yesterdays data in my report?

Hi @Johan-MTM ,

Sounds like it's about incremental refresh, you can refer to the following:

Incremental refresh for datasets and real-time data in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

With incremental refresh, the service dynamically partitions and separates data that needs to be refreshed frequently from data that can be refreshed less frequently.

@Anonymous thank you for the reply!
I'm still not sure I understand even after reader through the link you provided - Are there, if any, differences in using the refresh button in Power Bi Desktop or by schedueling a refresh via Sercives? Will both wy update the data set with new data from the database?

Hi @Johan-MTM ,

The manual refresh button in Power BI Desktop is to refresh your current report in Power BI Desktop, and clicking the refresh button in Power BI Desktop will not affect the reports you have published to Power BI Service. The report refresh you publish to Power BI Service needs to be done in Power BI Service.

To put it simply, these two refreshes work in different scenarios.

@Anonymous sorry for double post! I forgot I asked the same question before the weekend 😄
Anyway, thanks. Is there a way to schedule a refresh to update the data in the data set with new data from the database, lets say daily?

Thank you for the reply and link. I read the information but I'm still not sure i understand - Whats the difference (if any) between doing a manuall clicking refresh button in Power Bi Desktop:

or schedueling a refresh in Services:

Hi @Johan-MTM ,

No, if you don't configure scheduled refresh, you can manually refresh on the Power BI service. You can manually click the button to refresh.

And also if your data source requires a gateway, you also need to keep the gateway online and running during your scheduled refresh or when you refresh manually.

You can check more details from Data refresh in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
