Data Source settings and user validation in PowerBI and D365 Business Central

Hi,

We have issues with Power BI Desktop when accessing data from Dynamics 365 Business Central.

For some reason Dynamics 365 will not let us access a PowerBI report with data sources within the same organizational domain, without being prompted with a new login each time. When you open a new report within the same organizational domain, we are prompted with a log on, even If we allready are logged in.

The user credentials seem to be stored locally. It’s not possible to use alternative credentials. Any ideas how to avoid this?

Hi @Anonymous

When you say "we allready are logged in", do you mean signing in with your organizational account in Power BI Desktop? This sign-in credentials will not be used to connect to any data sources.

Credentials used to connect to data sources are managed separately. For security concerns, credentials and passwords are not stored in PBIX files. They are stored on the machine which have the .pbix created C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\User.zip.

Once you connect to a data source successfully with a user credential, this credential will be stored on the same computer. Next time when you connect to the same data source, it will use this credential automatically. If you share this report PBIX file to other people or you open it on a new computer, it requires sign-in credentials again because those computers don't have stored credentials.

There is no relationship between data source credentials and the account used to log in Power BI Desktop. Even if you log in, you can use other user credentials to connect to data sources in the same organization.
