Hi all,
This may sound really dumb but I have created a report and want to update the data.
Do I need to overwrite the file each time with the new dataset?
How would I go about building a report that shows changes over a period of time (days/weeks/months) etc?
I have a sneaking suspicion I may just be being rather stupid but hey you don't ask, you don't get (any further in your reports!!!)
Thanks,
Alan.

No, you don't need to. To better understand data refresh in Power BI, you can refer to this article.

Generally, you may need to use DAX functions to create some calculate measures/columns according to your needs, then show the measures/columns on your report, with your date columns(i.e. days/weeks/months/quarters/years) as Slicers, with which you can pick up any period of time you want to show.
In addition, I would suggest you go through the Power BI Guided Learning to start your learning journey through Power BI with this sequenced collection of courses, and understand the extensive and powerful capabilities of Power BI.
