DAX Query View Failure

I'm experiencing unexpected behavior in Power BI Desktop when using the DAX Query View. When I select a measure and open the DAX query view, I try to use the "Define with references and evaluate", but Power BI doesn't return any results. This functionality should show the DAX definition of the measure, its dependencies, and an evaluation, but clicking nothing happens. What could I be doing wrong? Is it happening to more users?

Hi @Syndicate_Admin

The “Define with references and evaluate” function in DAX Query View sometimes does not respond due to limitations or bugs in certain Power BI Desktop versions or model complexities.

To troubleshoot:

  • Update Power BI Desktop to the latest version.
  • Simplify your measure or test on another measure.
  • Use external tools like DAX Studio for evaluation and dependency analysis.
  • Report persistent issues to Microsoft via the feedback channels.
  • Restart Power BI or clear caches to rule out temporary glitches.

Please try these steps, and if the issue persists, we can further investigate.

Hi @Syndicate_Admin ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

Hi @grazitti_sapna , Thank you for your prompt response.

Hi @Syndicate_Admin , In addition to @grazitti_sapna response, I am adding some more points.

please try below things to fix the issue.

1. Please enable the Preview Feature, Go to File --> Options and Settings --> Options --> Preview Features.  Make DAX Query View is checked. Restart Power BI Desktop after enabling it.

2. If you are connected to a Live Dataset, some features may not work unless you switch to DirectQuery or import mode.

3. Please check the feature might be disabled at the tenant level. You may need to enable it in Power BI Admin Portal under Tenant Settings.

I hope this information helps. Please do let us know if you have any further queries.

Regards,

Dinesh
