Couldn't publish to PowerBI: error 429

Hello everyone,

Has anyone seen this error before when publishing PBIX file from desktop.

Fabric Capacity has got plenty of resources available.

Any help much appreciated?

Thank you,

The error 429 when publishing a PBIX file usually means the service is throttling requests. Common causes include repeated publishing, large file size, or temporary issues in your region.

Try these steps:

  1. Wait a few minutes and retry.
  2. Save with a new name or publish to another workspace.
  3. Check file size and remove unnecessary columns or tables.
  4. Upload PBIX directly through the Power BI Service instead of Desktop.
  5. Verify region health on the Power BI Service Status page.

If the issue continues, raise a Microsoft support ticket with the Request ID and Activity ID.

Hi @wojciech

The error 429 you’re seeing usually means the service is throttling requests - basically “too many requests” at that time. Even if your Fabric capacity looks fine, the backend can still reject a publish when there’s heavy traffic or background processes. Most of the time it’s temporary, so waiting a few minutes and trying again works. Make sure you’re running the latest version of Power BI Desktop as older builds sometimes hit service issues. You can also try publishing the PBIX to another workspace just to confirm it’s not workspace-specific. If it keeps happening consistently, raise a Microsoft support ticket and include the Request ID/Activity ID from the error so they can trace it. In short, this error isn’t with your report itself but with service throttling, and usually clears up after a retry.
