Connection mode

Hi Community, Is there any technical explanation of what makes a datasource support either Import mode, Direct query or Live connection ?   Thank you in advance.

    DataVitalizer - Yes, that is my understanding. The Power BI Connector written for a data source controls whether or not DirectQuery is supported or not supported, not the data source itself. Although, there may be some specific technical requirements that allows DirectQuery to be implemented on top of a data source. But, I mean DirectQuery is available on top of DB2 so...

DataVitalizer - I may be incorrect, but I do not believe the limitation of import versus DirectQuery/Live is a limitation of the data source but rather the Power BI Connector. As evidence, there have been multiple cases where a Power BI Connector for a data source only supports import but later is extended to also support DirectQuery. That said, there are possibly specific things that a data source must support that enable DirectQuery.

    Hi Greg_Deckler,

    Does that mean the suggested connection mode has nothing to do with the datasource itself but it's about the Powerbi connectors ?
