Connecting Rapid7 data to PowerBI

Hi guys,

My organisation is researching the feasibility of connecting our data from Rapid7 (specifically InsightVM) to a table in PowerBI. We would like to automate it as much as possible. From what I've researched so far, it's not recommended to create a direct API integration since it contains a lot of data.

I've seen that the best method would be to connect to a Data Warehouse and then export the data from there using an API. Can somebody:

(1) point me to some guidance for connecting Rapid7 data to a Datawarehouse (what's the difference between this and an SQL server?). Is it possible to automate this with incremental refreshes?

(2) point me to some guidance to connect the Datawarehouse to PowerBI(I think this is easier), and can it be automatically synchronised with a scheduled incremental refresh?

Excuse me for asking for all the basics, I'm not very well versed with this stuff.

Hi @KL008 ,

For Data Warehouse. It typically uses a dimensional model to structure data. For SQL server. It handles real-time data operations like insert, update, and delete, and is normalized to reduce redundancy.

It is possible to automate the data export with incremental refreshes. You can schedule the ETL process to run at regular intervals to ensure that the data warehouse is updated with the latest data.

Thanks for the feedback! How much technical expertise does one need to implement the data warehouse option, and is using an SQL server more straightforward?

Hi @KL008 ,

There are advantages and disadvantages to each, which may depend on your actual use. For beginners, you may first consider using SQL server, which is more convenient for incremental refresh.

Hope it helps!
