Hey everyone,
we have the following problem:
We will use SAP Datasphere as our main Data Management tool. IT wants that everyone should use the SAC for building Dashboards. But everyone is more interested in Power BI and therefore they download excel files and build it based on that with Power BI.
The IT is saying that the Datasphere can't connect with Power BI in the way they like. They say that it can connect, but first of all, they have to give permission to a user and refresh it every 2 month and also this user will be able to see and fetch all the data, which gets in conflict with Data Governance. A user shall only see and load specific data.
What are your experiences regarding this topic? How do you handle the SAP Datasphere in connection to Power BI?
Thank you 🙂

Hi,@PowerBIUser2026 .I am glad to help you.
My understanding of this issue is as follows:
the user can only see the data in the report that he/she has access to, (if a gateway connection is set up, the report is accessed using the data source credentials set up in the gateway connection as authentication)
Therefore, if the report producer creates a space that only the corresponding user can access, and uses this part of the data as the data source for the report, then in the future, when the report is successfully produced, published to the service, and the data source credentials are successfully configured, and then the user accesses the report after the report is refreshed, he or she will only be able to see the report data that he or she can access with the identity configured in the gateway connection's data source access credentials. You can also set up RLS to ensure that only certain users have access to some data to realize data protection.

If you are using the ODBC method and the connection mode is import, you need to configure the gateway connection and Scheduled Refresh for the report.
Configuring the data source credentials (what authentication method to use to access Datasphere) will be the key to solving your problem.
I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Carson Jian,

Hi,rajendraongole1.
Hello,@PowerBIUser2026 I am glad to help you.
As suggested by rajendraongole1, connecting Power BI to SAP Datasphere via an ODBC driver is a viable suggestion!

Hi @PowerBIUser2026 - It is a common challenge when integrating SAP Datasphere with Power BI while maintaining data governance and user-specific data access.
SAP Datasphere provides APIs (OData, SQL, or REST) that can be used to connect to Power BI. Here's how:
OData Connection: Power BI natively supports OData feeds. You can configure SAP Datasphere to expose only specific datasets through OData services.
SQL Interface: If your IT team has enabled the SQL interface in Datasphere, Power BI can connect using DirectQuery or Import mode via an ODBC or JDBC driver.
Benefits: These methods allow for more granular control over data access, exposing only the required datasets.
Use Power BI's ability to pass user credentials or tokens to SAP Datasphere during data fetch.
This requires configuring Single Sign-On (SSO) between Power BI and SAP Datasphere.

So if I create a space in Datasphere and assign a user to this specific space and connect it to Power BI, then the person will only see the data in this space?
