I built a report using Power BI Desktop (cloud Jan 2024 version), but when trying to publish it to Power BI Report Server (PBIRS May 2025) I encountered a version mismatch error.
Considering older RS desktop versions aren’t easily available, is there any workaround without:
Downgrading the desktop (installing an old RS version), or
Rebuilding the report?
Or is the only viable option to simply upgrade PBIRS to match the desktop version?

When I click on the solution link, it shows me the January 2025 version instead of the January 2024 version.
Hi @Anonymous ,
The Microsoft site always points to the latest PBIRS release (right now that’s January 2025), so older versions like January 2024 aren’t available to download. Since PBIX files aren’t backward compatible, the best option is to upgrade your PBIRS to the newer release so it matches the Desktop version you used to build the report.
Thank you
Hi @v-menakakota,
Thank you for the clarification. Could you please guide me on the steps to upgrade PBIRS to the May 2025 release? Do I need to uninstall the current version first, or can it be upgraded in place without affecting existing reports and configurations?
Appreciate your support.
