Column naming conventions for dim tables

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to define conventions for our team and this one I'm unsure about and unable to find much info.

Imagine I have the following dim tables in my PBI dataset:

  • Customer
  • Location
  • Device

In each of these tables, there are columns:

  • Code
  • Name
  • Description

Is it generally better to fully define each field name, e.g. `Customer[Customer Code]`, `Location[Location Name]`, or keep them simple and without repetition, e.g. `Customer[Code]`?
My opinion on using longer names:

  • - Introduces repetition
  • + May make it easier to search (if you search for `Customer Code` and the field is `Customer[Code]`, it will currently not show up)

Because of the latter, I'm leaning into longer names at the moment.

@Willow0136 , We usually prefer full name like customer code. This make clear and easy to search
