Change table to referenced table without redoing visuals

We have a report with a lot of visuals.  Because of performance issues, we are adding a new "table" in Power Query that is really a reference to the actual fact table that contains all our calculated columns and measures created using Dax.

We plan on recreating (copy and paste) all the calculated columns and measures in the new "reference" table so that they match what is in the true fact table and then change the visuals to use the reference table.

It's easy enough to pull the columns from the reference table and add them to each visual, but it will be very time-consuming to replicate the visual settings on these new fields.

Is there any way to basically say, "where ever you find a column from table A, change it's source table to table B" ?

You can try renaming the fact table and then naming the Reference table the same as the original fact table in Power Query. If the table name and column names are the same, the visuals and measures should pick up the "reference" table

Not sure if you found a soution but I needed to do the same thing.

What I did was:

  1. Make a copy of the file in question.
  2. Open both files.
  3. In the original file, create your references to the existing data table and name accordinly.
    1. Table1 - Reference
    2. Table2 - Reference
  4. Link Tables accordinly
  5. Move your measures to the new reference tables and fix all references in the measures so they are accessing fields in the reference tables and not the main table.
  6. In the copy of the original file take the tables and just rename them to the same names as your reference tables in the original file.
    1. Table1 ==> Table1 - Reference
    2. Table2 ==> Table2 - Reference
  7. Copy the visuals from the copy of the original file you just renamed the tables in and paste them into the original file that you created the reference tables in and recreated the measures
  8. Check in the fields pannel and you should see the visuals referncing the new reference tables now.
