Can only certain DB roles connect to SQL server through gateway?

I am working outside of the confines of my IT department and trying to provide justification to get database access for my reports.  One potential avenue that I'm exploring is requesting a non-writing role in the database (db_datareader or db_denydatawriter). 

Does anyone have experience with this to know whether these roles would have a negative impact regarding my ability to pull data directly?

As a late follow-up, having read only access has not had any adverse impact on my ability to connect to a SQL server data source

The credential for successfully connecting to the SQL server is Server or port number.

Sorry, I don't understand too much about whether the role you described has a restriction on connecting to power bi.
