Button Navigation

Hi Everyone,

The dashboard i am currently working on has 4 modules amounting to total 60 pages. We have been trying to separate one module into separate PBIX and publish it separately because the data size is huge and it affects the performance of the dashboard. Now here is the issue. Since we have two PBIX but we want the user to be able to navigate into all four modules. Earlier we used page navigatoin but now we want to be able to navigate to a separate PBIX for this one module. We used web URL navigation for this purpose but the issue is that it opens a separate tab which the client doesn't want. Can you guys help me find a solution for this.

Hi @hrugwed

I wanted to check if you had the opportunity to review the information provided by @krishnakanth240 , @JamieHolding , @FreemanZ . Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Thank you.

Hi, Went through the responses shared by everyone and realised that the client is not willing to pay extra for the effort and time it requires to create a app and also visually it may not be as appealing compared to the dashboard that we have already created so we went ahead with the existing solution of having the module open in a new tab. Thanks everyone for there support.

Hi @hrugwed ,

We really appreciate your efforts and for letting us know the update on the issue.

Please continue using fabric community forum for your further assistance.

Thank you

Hi @hrugwed

Power BI can not navigate within the same tab to a different PBIX. Page navigation works only inside one report, and Web URL navigation always opens a new tab. So, workaround is you can use Power BI App and organize modules as separate reports with app navigation.

Publish the reports in the same workspace and then create an App and list them both within the app. You can then navigate between them.

hi @hrugwed ,

You request is so clear that you may try with one of your AI tools, here is what i see workable:

Solution 1: Power BI App Workspace (Recommended for Most Teams)

This is the simplest no-code/low-code method using native Power BI Service features, ideal for teams without developer resources.

How It Works

Combine both PBIX reports into a single App Workspace, then use Dashboard Tiles + Custom Link Navigation to enable same-tab jumps between reports without extra tools.

Step-by-Step Implementation

  1. Publish Both PBIX Files
    • Publish the main dashboard (4 modules, 60 pages) and the separated large module to the same workspace in Power BI Service. Ensure both use compatible authentication and datasets (if sharing data, use a shared dataset or live connection).

  2. Create a Master Dashboard
    • In the workspace, create a new dashboard. Pin key visuals from all four modules (including the separated PBIX) to this dashboard as tiles. For the separated module, pin a summary visual (e.g., a KPI card or summary table) that acts as the navigation entry.

  3. Set Up Same-Tab Navigation for Tiles
    1. Hover over the tile linked to the separated PBIX, click the ellipsis (…), and select Edit details.
    2. Under Functionality, check Set custom link.
    3. Choose Link Type = Report and select the separated PBIX report from the workspace.
    4. Check Open custom link in the same tab? = Yes (critical for avoiding new tabs).
    5. Click Apply to save settings.

  4. Add Back Navigation
    • In the separated PBIX report, add a Button (Insert > Buttons) with the action set to Back to dashboard to let users return to the master dashboard without new tabs.

This is the intended architectural solution for your problem. Instead of trying to link two separate PBIX files via buttons, you package them together.

How it works: You publish both PBIX files (the original 3-module file and the separated 1-module file) to the same Workspace. Then, you create a Power BI App for that workspace.

The Fix: Inside the App setup, you can add both reports. The App creates a native Navigation Pane on the left side of the screen.
