Just wondering if anyone has found an "out of the box" solution for a box plot visual that that displays a years and quarters axis (with appropriate slicing and/or drill down capability). Based on one YouTube video I watched, this looked possible...I just have to build it from scratch. The challenge is that I have 5 metrics to work with, so I think I would need to build out the model 5X, once for each metric I am interested in box-plotting. Let me know if there could be a way to simplify that.
Also, I would like to be able to possibly show more than one metric at the same time or, if that doesn't really make sense, be able to select which metric is displayed. I did see where "parameters" can possibly solve this last part.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and help.
Creating a box plot visual in Power BI with a years and quarters axis, along with slicing and drill-down capabilities, can be a bit complex, especially when dealing with multiple metrics. Here are some steps and tips to simplify the process:
1. Setting Up the Date Hierarchy
To display data by years and quarters:
-->Create a Date Table: Ensure your data model includes a date table with columns for Year, Quarter, Month, etc.
Use Hierarchy: Add the Year and Quarter fields to the axis of your box plot visual. This will enable drill-down capabilities.
2. Handling Multiple Metrics
Instead of creating separate models for each metric, you can use Field Parameters to dynamically switch between metrics:
Enable Field Parameters: Go to Options and Settings > Options > Preview Features and enable Field Parameters.
Create a Parameter: In the Modeling tab, create a new parameter for your metrics. This will allow you to switch between different metrics using a slicer.
3. Displaying Multiple Metrics
If you want to show more than one metric at a time, consider the following:
Multiple Box Plots: Place multiple box plot visuals on the same report page, each configured for a different metric.
Dynamic Metric Selection: Use a slicer to allow users to select which metric to display. This can be done using the Field Parameters feature

Hi @MarkD1722
Since you're asking a complex question beyond the general information available in YouTube videos, it's essential to understand what you're trying to achieve and perhaps even try implementing it ourselves.
What I recommend is either starting to work on it and then asking about where you're stuck, or providing an example of the data in a workable format along with an image of the desired result.

Rita,
So here is where I am at... I created two separate boxplot charts from scratch for two different metrics, with the x-axis being a date hierarchy to see a metric change over time (by qtr and yr). All the "pieces" of the boxplots are made using indvidual measures and associated formatting (e.g., error bars to connect max and min). An individual set of measures is needed for creating the boxplot for a single metric (and I actually have a total of 5 metrics). I was hoping to use field parameters to provide a way to switch between metrics, but it appears that in order to "switch" between metrics, I believe I would have to select all 8 fields of a desired metric which is is not convenient for any user (see image below). Because all the measures for each metric set are based on a single column of data, I believe there should be a way to use the field parameters for switching, but I cannot see, with my limited knowledge/understanding of this parameters feature, how that works.
Is what I am describing possible or not? If it is, how do I use the field parameters (or some other feature) to accomplish this? Calculation Groups?
The two metrics in this case are App-Act and CER-Act.
