Best Way to Share and Update a Shared Data Model

At my work we have a core PowerBi desktop file that we build our reports off. 

This worked fine when the file only had about 10-15 pages but it is growing and also it now needs to be shared amongst 2 people in different countries. 

I would like to be able to have one core datamodel that gets constantly updated and then a number of splintered off files that utilise the core datamodel, each of these splinters being a set of reports. 

I've looked into connecting to an online dataset via the desktop program but it doesn't allow you to edit the original dataset 

What's the best way to achieve my aims?

@doubleclick , You have already separated the visual and dataset files. Means you publish dataset file and other team usage that for visualization.

If you are a premium customer you can compare your desktop model with the workspace model, if the XMLA endpoint is enabled
