I'm currently using a basic stacked bar chart to track the percentage completion of a project as below :
It was requested to add a milestone point on a bar chart like above as an estimate from the table:
However, I am unaware of a visual that I can utilize in this manner?
Desired end product would be similar to this artistic masterpiece /s :
To achieve the desired visualization with milestone points on a stacked bar chart in Power BI, you can use a combination of a stacked bar chart and a line chart overlay. Here's how you can set it up:
1. **Create Stacked Bar Chart**:
Create a stacked bar chart to represent the percentage completion of the project over time. Use the appropriate date column (e.g., "Date") for the x-axis and the percentage completion measure for the y-axis.
2. **Add Milestone Points**:
Create a new table or use an existing one that contains the milestone points along with their corresponding dates. You can add these milestone points as separate data points in your chart.
3. **Create Line Chart for Milestone Points**:
Add a line chart to your report and use the milestone points table as the data source. Use the date column for the x-axis and a measure that represents the milestone point value for the y-axis. You can set the line style to markers only to show only the milestone points without connecting lines.
4. **Overlay Line Chart on Stacked Bar Chart**:
Overlay the line chart with milestone points on top of the stacked bar chart. You can do this by adjusting the visual layers in Power BI or by positioning the line chart visually on top of the stacked bar chart.
5. **Format and Adjust Visuals**:
Format both the stacked bar chart and the line chart to ensure they align properly and are visually appealing. You may need to adjust the colors, axis labels, and other visual properties to make the combined chart easy to understand.
By following these steps, you can create a visualization that shows the percentage completion of the project over time with milestone points represented as data points on the chart. This approach allows you to incorporate milestone points into your existing stacked bar chart while maintaining clarity and readability.
