This visual was built using Vega and Deneb in Power BI. It was inspired from a project by the incredible Nadieh Bremer.
I actually had created a zoomable packed circles custom visual using the Power BI custom visuals API a few years ago using d3.js, but this version turned out better. Although this implementation was challenging because I needed the visual to calculate positions, sizes, and animation interpolations on the fly while zooming, I was able to take some lessons learned from my Easing Functions POC.
The nice thing about using vega for this is that the development was faster overall because I could make pieces of it more bespoke and I did not have to consider setting up generic formatting properties that would work across many use cases.
I'd say this was probably my most challenging vega implementation to date. I hope it inspires some ideas and demonstrates what's possible with @dm-p's game-changing Deneb visual.
