Issue initializing Fabric Data Engineering session in Visual Studio Code

Good morning everyone,

I’m using the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineering experience in Visual Studio Code, but I’m unable to initialize the session. The notebook keeps loading indefinitely (I waited around 20 minutes), and the Fabric kernel never starts.

The same notebook runs correctly when I open it directly in the Fabric web experience, so it seems specific to the VS Code integration.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a workaround?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi robertozsr
This is a known issue with the current Microsoft Fabric VS Code extension, especially during Spark session initialization. Since the notebook works in the Fabric web experience, the issue is with VS Code rather than the notebook itself.

Here is the Documnet  you can refere to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-au/answers/questions/1852980/cant-run-azure-fabric-notebook-cells-in-...

Are you currently using the latest version of the extension , if not please update it.

Here are a few steps that usually fix it:

  1. Update the Fabric VS Code extension to the latest version.

  2. Sign out and sign back in to your Microsoft account in VS Code.

  3. Check network or proxy settings to ensure access to Fabric
  4. Clear the Fabric extension cache and restart VS Code.

If it still fails, the temporary workaround is to run the notebook in the Fabric web interface until the extension is updated.
