Hello @miranda_rs ,

Thank you for reaching out. Based on your request to securely share a Power BI semantic model with your external client while ensuring automatic updates and authentication, there are a few approaches that might work best for your scenario.

  1. One option is to use Azure AD B2B (Microsoft Entra B2B), which allows you to securely share Power BI content with external users. This method ensures controlled access without the need for manual exports. More details on how to set this up can be found here:
Distribute Power BI content to external guest users with Microsoft Entra B2B.
  2. Another approach is to enable XMLA Read-Only Endpoint, which allows the client to connect directly to the Power BI dataset. This eliminates manual file sharing and ensures that they always have the most up-to-date data. Access is managed through Azure Active Directory. This works best if the client is using Power BI, Excel, or Analysis Services. However, it does require Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) or Premium Capacity. You can find more details here:
Use XMLA Endpoint for Power BI Datasets.
  3. If you prefer API based access instead, you can publish the data to a Microsoft Fabric Warehouse or Lakehouse and share it using Fabric's GraphQL API. This allows them to get updated data via API requests, ensuring seamless integration with tools like Qlik Sense while maintaining security through Azure AD and OAuth authentication. More details are available here:
    Microsoft Fabric API for GraphQL.
  4. Additionally, there is a detailed guide on different ways to share Power BI semantic models with external users, which might be helpful in finding the best approach for your needs:
How to Share Fabric / Power BI Semantic Models with External Users.

What customer type is this - internal or external?

Why import rather than direct connections?

Better prepare a CSV extract from the actual data source and share that.

None of the Fabric based options will be free.
