Confused by DAX terminology

Hi there! I've just started using DAX and this is my first post in this community.

I'm a little bit confused by the terminology used in the DAX documentation. For example, the SWITCH function:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dax/switch-function-dax

They talk about:

  • DAX expression
  • scalar value
  • constant value
  • scalar expression

Can anybody explain which of these are different and what these terms mean? Thanks!

Instead of the MS doc, it's better to use DAX Guide. Everything you need to understand terminology and DAX itself is in there. Just study it.

Here are examples of the usage of SWITCH.

Thanks! Yes, that's much more thorough than the Microsoft docs.
