Can LOOKUPVALUE be used in not-related tables?

Hello.

According to a learning module of Microsoft Docs LOOKUPVALUE can be used in a row context when tables are not related. But in the documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dax/lookupvalue-function-dax)  says the opposite, LOOKUPVALUE can only search valus in related tables. Which is right?

Hi, @Anonymous , do you mean the remarks on the use of LOOKUPVALUE?

This function is not supported for use in DirectQuery mode when used in calculated columns or row-level security (RLS) rules.

RLS is a totally different thing from ROW CONTEXT. You might want to read this documentation for details.

LOOKUPVALUE is a versatile function for looking up values between tables regardless of relationships.

Thanks to the great efforts by MS engineers to simplify syntax of DAX! Most beginners are SUCCESSFULLY MISLED to think that they could easily master DAX; but it turns out that the intricacy of the most frequently used RANKX() is still way beyond their comprehension!

DAX is simple, but NOT EASY!

No, I mean in the explanation of the parameter search_columnName. It says: "The name of an existing column. It can be in the same table as result_columnName or in a related table."

And, besides that, I'm not sure how the description of the return value of the function makes sense when the tables are not related.
