Gantt Chart visual limitations

I've built prototype reports based upon several differrent Gantt Chart custom visuals.  Some come pretty close to what I need, but they all seem to have limitations that restrict the use of measures, in particular, for start date, end date and category/progress.  Is this a technical limitation of some sort, or could the limitation be overcome with some custom programming?
