World Champs Finale Build - The Peach Paradox by Ruxandra Vilau

The Peach Paradox: Who Controls the World's Peach Market?

This report explores the hidden concentration behind the global peach market, using FAOSTAT production and trade data for peaches and nectarines covering 2010–2024.

The central finding is a paradox: China produces 63% of the world's peaches yet exports less than 1% of its own production, while a handful of Mediterranean countries — led by Spain — control the majority of global trade.

The report is structured across three pages:

  • The Production page establishes the efficiency story behind global peach output and reveals that China is almost solely responsible for global productivity gains, while the rest of the world grew production by just 5% over 14 years.
  • The Trade page analyses both the supply and demand sides of global peach trade, showing that Spain alone accounts for 35% of global export volume and that demand is overwhelmingly concentrated in European markets.
  • The Synthesis page brings both threads together through a what-if analysis — demonstrating that if China exported just 4% of its own production, it would immediately surpass Spain as the world's largest peach exporter.

The report is fully interactive, with cross-filtering between visuals, dynamic annotations, year and market filters, and tooltips providing additional data on hover. It is designed to meet WCAG 4.5:1 colour contrast accessibility standards throughout, with alt text on all visuals and logical tab order across all pages.

Building this report has been an incredible journey — it represents my biggest data visualization competition to date, and every design decision reflects my passion for data analytics, storytelling and making complex information accessible to everyone.

Thank you,

Ruxandra
