The Tale of Genji Project Background Hikaru Genji (光源氏) is the mesmerizing protagonist of “The Tale of Genji,” a timeless masterpiece of Japanese literature penned by Murasaki Shikibu during the Heian era (AD 1008). As the emperor's illustrious son, Genji enchanted many with his radiant beauty and captivating charm. His legacy endures as the most celebrated and adored figure in Japanese literary history. I have visualized his myriad—though most illustrious—affairs and relationships, employing diverse criteria. It's essential to acknowledge that numerous other relationships and affairs are not encompassed in my data. My aim was to celebrate and share the richness of Japan's ancient culture and literature through my data visualization. This project has been a deeply enjoyable endeavor for me. Data Collection I sourced my data primarily from a Japanese website, Genji Biyori. This site provided abundant valuable information about “The Tale of Genji,” and it inspired me to gather data from it. https://ryoutei-senryu.jp/ I also utilized Copilot to describe each princess' appearance, allowing the audience to visualize each individual more vividly. Visuals The choice of visuals was straightforward; I gravitate towards simple and basic visuals for presenting data. This approach enhances audience comprehension more effectively than sophisticated visuals. Background Design I crafted the Canvas background in PowerPoint, leveraging its graphic design tools. This method proved highly effective, and I saved the background as an SVG file before importing it into Power BI. Theme I meticulously crafted the Power BI Theme using traditional Japanese colors to enhance the cultural aesthetic for the audience. I sourced the color codes from the Nippon Colors website: https://nipponcolors.com/ Accessibility In my journey to enhance report design with accessibility in mind, I delved into the PL-300 course, which provided invaluable insights. My goal was to consistently incorporate accessibility principles into my report designs. Choosing between a completely “Accessible Colour Theme” and retaining elements of Japanese culture in the colour palette was a challenging decision. Ultimately, I opted for the latter, striking a balance between accessibility and cultural authenticity. As someone who is partially colour blind, I made a conscious effort to use more contrasting colours to ensure clarity and readability. Throughout this project, I learned how to effectively use “Alt Text” and “Tab Order” to make content more accessible. These techniques are something I intend to employ in my future work. Description of each tab 思ひ人(Omoibito) - Lover I analyzed the collected data based on three different criteria: Affair/relationship category Frequency of meetings Frequency of communication Each criterion is examined through the lens of remarkable versus unremarkable romances. Upon analysis, the data reveals that Genji was quite the romantic, despite his numerous relationships and affairs. 五色(Goshiki) - Diversity I explored the collected data concerning diversity and inclusion, focusing on three criteria: Social class Age Appearance The findings show that Genji was quite open to women of various backgrounds. However, it is noteworthy that he was perpetually drawn to the memory of Fujitsubo, his beautiful stepmother and first love. 年(Toshi) - Age I scrutinized the collected data using two criteria: Genji’s age and the number of his affairs/relationships The ages of Genji and his princesses at the time of their meetings or relationships Interestingly, Genji’s romantic peak occurred in his late teens, which seems early. But considering the average lifespan of that era, it is understandable that he had many affairs and relationships during his late teens and twenties. 地(Chi) - Location I visualized the locations where Genji met his princesses on a map. He encountered most of them within Kyoto and its suburbs. The table to the right shows the locations alongside the princesses’ names. By expanding a location name, you will reveal the corresponding princesses. Clicking on a princess’s name will filter the map accordingly. 恋ふ(Kou) - Fall in Love with I wished to use hand-drawn pictures of each princess, but due to copyright issues, I settled on a summary table instead. The numbers on the left represent the order in which Genji had affairs or relationships with the princesses. This week's report is from the UK's very own Office of National Statistics. I wanted to show some of the amazing things Power BI can do - from shape maps to the rarely used treemap (does this count as a horizontal Mikko chart maybe?) to enhanced data labels and even some overlapping columns. I wanted the design to be intuitive - the user starts by looking at a regional comparison, and they can drill down by hovering on any of the cards to a specific region - and seeing which countries send them the most visitors - by spending, nights spent, or by # of visits. I'm also very proud of the vertical SVG you can see in the Matrix in the details tab - this is an SVG I made for this entry. Users can filter by region (Eastern, Northern, Southern, Western) to explore specific areas. Color palettes adjust automatically based on the selected type of color blindness, ensuring accessibility. The Narrative: From Human Habit to Planetary Impact This report tracks the journey from how we live (individual emissions) to what we have built (historical legacy), ending with the physical bill the planet is currently paying. The narrative structure moves from individual carbon intensity (per capita) to the cumulative historical burden, concluding with the observable impact on the global climate system. The Challenge: Making a Logical Jump The biggest challenge was connecting the dots between two very different types of data. Chapters 1 and 2 look at specific countries and regions, while Chapter 3 looks at the planet as a whole. To make this transition work, the report shifts from looking at where emissions happen to what they eventually do to the Earth. It frames the global temperature and sea level changes as the combined physical "receipt" for all that regional activity we looked at earlier. Chapter 1 - The Current State. This chapter uses a world map to visualize the wide range in per capita CO₂ emissions across nations. Chapter 2 - The Trajectory. A line chart and a continental heatmap track 174 years of emission shifts, capturing how regional trajectories have diverged over time, from the Early Industrial Era to the Paris Agreement. Chapter 3 - The Collective Impact. This final section shifts to planetary outcomes, using a 10-year lag and 0-100 normalization to align temperature anomalies with rising sea levels. Technical Notes 0–100 Normalization: Comparing degrees Celsius directly to millimeters is not mathematically sound. Normalization was used to rescale both variables to a 0–100 range, allowing for a precise visual comparison of their relative trajectories and rates of change over the 174-year timeline. 10-Year Temporal Lag: A 10-year lag was applied to the sea level data to account for the physical response time of the climate system. Page 1: Landing Page I always like starting with a landing page because it sets the tone. It gives users a quick idea of what to expect- there’s a title, a short description, a few key KPIs, and a navigation button to guide them into the report. Think of it as the “welcome screen” that gets you started. Page 2: Global Overview Here, we’re looking at peaches across the world. I start with three key KPIs: production, area harvested, and yield. And the order matters- First, what are we producing, then where are we growing, and finally how efficiently we’re doing it. Next, we have trend charts to quickly see how things have changed over time, along with a map-just a fun, visual way to explore the data. On the right, I’ve highlighted a few interesting insights: First, a dumbbell chart comparing production from 2010 to 2024. It clearly shows the shift over time and yes, China is way ahead, so there’s a slider to make comparisons easier. Then, a table looking at growth % and efficiency index. Some countries like Turkey and Uzbekistan show high growth, but surprisingly, their efficiency isn’t as high. So growth doesn’t always mean efficiency. And finally, a top 5 comparison based on growth and efficiency. One surprising insight- China doesn’t show up here, even though it’s a global leader. Instead, countries like Afghanistan stand out with high growth. Page 3 is where things get a bit more focused and fun. We zoom into the United States. At the top, we have a few KPIs and trends. One clear story: The area harvested is decreasing, and naturally, production is going down too. Possible reasons? Urbanization, rising labor costs, and competition. There’s also a ranking chart showing how the U.S. position has changed over time and you can clearly see the decline. Now comes my favorite part- I always believe a report should help you take action, not just show data. So I built a “comeback scenario” using what-if analysis. We have two sliders: area change % and yield improvement %. Right now, both are set to zero- which tells us that if nothing changes, the U.S. could drop to rank 11 in the next 5 years. But as you play around with the sliders, you can see how improvements can change the ranking. It’s not a prediction-but it’s a great starting point for thinking about what could be done. And a quick fun fact to end on. The most stressful but fruitful 20 minutes of my life indeed! Backgrounds were AI-generated and art-directed to match the warm, earthy color language. Video transitions were authored, animated, rendered and self-hosted. No stock footage, no templates. Crafted from scratch. Custom Visuals: combined with custom HTML/SVG measures: hero KPI cards with contextual overlays, animated trend charts, waffle charts, and interactive donut breakdowns. Every custom element complements native functionality. Accessibility: Alt text on all visuals, logical tab order, WCAG-compliant contrast ratios, and guided tutorials on every page. This project pushed the boundaries of what I thought was possible inside Power BI. Visa complications, a microphone failure live on stage at FabCon, and the constant pressure of the clock... but every constraint sharpened the focus on what mattered most: delivering the best possible experience.
